GWM Confirms Tank 300 Hi4-T Plug-in Hybrid

GWM has confirmed the launch of the all-new Tank 300 Hi4-T Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) for New Zealand, marking a further expansion of its rapidly growing hybrid off-road range.

Set to arrive in Q1 2026, the Tank 300 Hi4-T combines electrified performance, efficiency and class-leading 4x4 capability, delivering New Zealand drivers a bold new choice for adventure, on and off the road. Previewed at GWM Tech Day in September, the Tank 300 Hi4-T builds on the brand’s proven Hi4-T hybrid architecture, already successfully deployed in the Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha range.

Its introduction signals the next step in GWM’s commitment to bringing electrified powertrains to the market while continuing to deliver the rugged capability that Kiwi buyers expect. 

 Key Features

At its heart, the Tank 300 Hi4-T features a 2.0-litre turbocharged hybrid engine paired with a 9-speed Hybrid Automatic Transmission (9HAT), delivering strong low-end torque, smooth on-road performance, and incredible efficiency. The Hi4-T platform retains a true mechanical four-wheel-drive system, complete with a low-range transfer case and locking differentials, ensuring the Tank 300 Hi4-T remains a genuine off-road SUV rather than a soft-roader with electrification. Engineered for both adventure and everyday versatility, the Tank 300 Hi4-T offers a braked towing capacity of up to 3,000kg, making it ideal for caravans, boats and off-road touring. It also features Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) capability, enabling owners to power external equipment, tools, and accessories directly from the vehicle, perfect for camping, remote locations and outdoor lifestyles.  

Hi-4T Electric Range

As demonstrated in the Tank 500 and Cannon Alpha, GWM’s intelligent Hi4-T system allows the Tank 300 to operate in electric, hybrid and petrol modes, optimising energy use depending on driving conditions. The result is improved fuel efficiency for daily commuting, smooth highway performance, and precise torque control when tackling challenging off-road environments such as sand, mud, steep climbs and rocky trails. 

Notably, the Cannon Alpha Hi4-T holds the distinction of being the first, and still the sole, PHEV to make it to the top of the gruelling Beer O’Clock Hill. Expanding the Hi4-T platform into the Tank 300 also reflects GWM’s broader strategy of offering diverse powertrain options, now including petrol, diesel, hybrid and PHEV across its range.
