GWM Hi4 and Hi4-T: Intelligent Hybrid Technology

GWM has introduced some exciting hybrid technology across their range, and we're seeing a lot of questions about what Hi4 and Hi4-T actually mean. With these new systems now available in New Zealand, we thought we'd break down the technology in plain language and explain how it works; whether you're after efficient everyday driving or serious off-road capability. 

 

What is Hi4? 

Hi4 (Hybrid Intelligent 4-Wheel Drive) is GWM's advanced hybrid system designed primarily for road-focused SUVs. It combines a petrol engine with one or two electric motors (depending on model) to deliver intelligent all-wheel drive, smooth power delivery, and improved fuel efficiency. 

Hi4 works by continuously monitoring driving conditions, such as speed, traction, and driver input, to determine the most effective combination of electric and petrol power. This allows the vehicle to operate efficiently, provide confident traction in poor conditions, and deliver refined performance on the open road. Depending on the model, Hi4 offers up to 9 different drive modes including Snow, Mud, and Sport, tailored to various terrain and driving conditions.

GWM Hi4 and Hi4-T: A Purpose-Built Hybrid System 

GWM's Hi4 system represents the brand's core approach to hybrid all-wheel-drive technology, focusing on efficiency, intelligence, and seamless performance across everyday driving conditions. Building on this foundation, GWM developed Hi4-T as a more robust evolution, engineered specifically for vehicles that demand genuine off-road capability. 

 

What Makes Hi4-T Different 

Hybrid technology is often associated with efficient urban driving; however, GWM’s Hi4-T (Hybrid Intelligent 4WD TANK) system is designed specifically for off-road use. This intelligent four-wheel drive system is built for vehicles that demand strength, control, and durability, bringing together advanced hybrid innovation and proven off-road engineering in one integrated system. 

Hi4-T pairs a turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a full mechanical 4WD system, including up to three electromechanically lockable differentials and a low-range transfer case. This configuration delivers strong, immediate torque under load, making it particularly effective in low-speed, high-demand conditions such as off-road driving, towing and steep terrain. At the same time, Hi4-T retains the advantages of electrification and, in suitable conditions, is capable of operating in electric-only mode with a driving range of up to 120 km. 

 

GWM’s Hi4-T Range 

GWM’s Hi4-T technology has been introduced across select PHEV models where off-road capability and durability are central to the vehicle’s purpose. 

Currently, GWM’s Hi4-T range includes the Cannon Alpha ute and Tank 500 premium SUV, with the upcoming launch of the Tank 300 PHEV set to become the third addition to the Hi4-T lineup.
